7/15/2026The transformation of the environment, nature, and landscapes means that societies in the 21st century are facing serious challenges. Humans and nature must continually adapt - whether due to the increase in greenhouse gases, the decrease in biodiversity, or the growing use of area in urban spaces. In threshold and developing countries, megacities are arising. In contrast, in the old industrialized regions, dense urban areas are shrinking and leaving behind large spaces that must be used meaningfully. The bachelors program in Ecology and Environmental Planning teaches knowledge, skills, and abilities to confront these challenges while moving toward sustainable development of urban and rural spaces. During your studies, you learn to conduct scientifically sound analyses and assessments of ecosystems and human living environments, developing goals and measures to improve the environmental situation in a participatory manner. As for every other bachelors degree program at TU Berlin, applicants must possess a university entrance qualification certificate to apply to the Ecology and Environmental Planning program. Generally, the Abitur serves as the university entrance qualification certificate. If you do not have a formal university entrance qualification, you may still be able to study at TU Berlin if you can provide proof of certain professional qualifications. The Ecology and Environmental Planning bachelors program is taught in German. If you are applying with a foreign school-leaving certificate, you must provide proof of German skills at a specific level. This is a prerequisite for admission. Knowledge of English is useful as some courses/modules in the compulsory elective component are offered in English. However, this is not a condition for admission to studies. The Ecology and Environmental Planning program is made up of two phases: basic principles and advanced courses (1st-5th semesters) and the specialization (6th-8th semesters). In the first phase, you are taught the subject and methodological principles (1st-3rd semesters) and then apply these in student projects. Your social skills and interdisciplinary work in teams are also enhanced during this phase. The professional internship in the fifth semester offers you a chance for career orientation. In the second phase, you choose a qualification profile. The masters program is divided into compulsory, compulsory elective, and elective components. The compulsory component totals 97 credit points including the projects in the phase basic principles and advanced courses. In addition, you must take compulsory elective modules totaling 72 credit points and elective modules totaling 29 credit points. Besides these modules, you must also complete a professional internship for 30 credit points and the bachelor's thesis (12 credit points). The objectives and structure of the program as well as the examination requirements and details on how the examinations are carried out are set down in the study and examination regulations. There is a proposed course schedule for the degree program. This is a recommendation for how to complete the degree program within the standard period of study of eight semesters. You can find it as an annex to the study and examination regulations. The most current version of the regulations applies to applicants. The bachelors degree program in Ecology and Environmental Planning is modular in design. A module combines curriculum content relating to a specific topic. Modules often include a variety of different study and teaching formats such as lectures, practical tutorials, seminars, and practical projects. Students are required to earn a specific number of credit points and complete certain coursework and assessments in each module. A current overview of all modules is available in TU Berlins module transfer system (MTS). The MTS also provides an overview of which modules are mandatory for your degree program and which are elective. Detailed module descriptions provide information about the contents of modules, learning objectives, participation requirements, workload, types of assessment, etc. The module catalogue is based on the study and examination regulations. The most current version of the regulations applies to applicants. As part of the program, you must complete a professional internship lasting at least six months. You must have completed the internship at the latest when registering for the final exam in your bachelors program, which typically means registration for the bachelor's thesis. 30 credit points are awarded for the professional internship. The bachelor's program in Ecology and Environmental Planning teaches sound knowledge of key elements and mutual dependencies of ecological systems, how they function, and the associated benefits for human society. As a graduate, you are familiar with the methods with which you can ascertain, analyze, and assess the state of nature and landscapes. You are familiar with the local, regional, and global causes of environmental changes and their relevance for sustainable development of urban and rural spaces. You are also able to include decision-makers, affected parties, the interested public, and other disciplines in an appropriate manner during your planning processes. Besides expert knowledge and skills in your subject, during the bachelor's program you will gain soft skills that enable you to work in a scientifically responsible way, to develop approaches to work and solutions that are critical and reflective, and to work in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary teams.
